Workshop agents of evangelization on gender-based violence in conflicts in South Sudan
A workshop has been conducted by Religious, Diocesan Clergy and other Pastoral agents in South Sudan in partnership with the Justice and Peace (J&P) Office of the International Union of Superior Generals (UISG) in Collaboration with the Pastoral Department in the South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SSCBC)-Juba dated 8th to 14 July, 2019 in Kit-Jubek State.
We, as committed agents of evangelization and participants of the five-day workshop on Gender-Based Violence in Conflict; and after a deep reflection and mutual sharing of extensive experiences, based on the Sacred Scripture, the Sacred Tradition, the Teaching of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, the Papal Encyclicals and the Pastoral letters of the Bishops, the moral, ethical and the Catholic Social Teaching have unanimously come up with the following affirmations:
We acknowledge that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a reality and its societal impact has created countless crises. We also commend and recognize all the tremendous efforts accorded by various institutions and well-wishers in the country in the on-going sensitization programs.
However, we also complement our voices and “Denounce the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence that includes; sexual violence, dowry exploitation, forced under-age girl-child marriage, child abduction, forced conscription and other forms of human right abuses in South Sudan.”
Therefore, in the spirit of solidarity, humility, and compassion, we recommend and promise to carry out this message across the country through FM Radio shows, seminars, workshops and conferences, civic education, and ensure that it is included in the catholic schools education curriculum up to the grass-root levels in order to restore the impaired culture and dignity of the South Sudanese people.
Many thanks and God’s blessing
