AFRICA/TOGO – A nun: “To be artisans of peace, thanks to the courage that comes from faith”
“The year that just ended was marked by severe moments of tension due to the socio-political crisis in the whole country and in particular our central region of Togo. It is not easy, in the face of unrest and unprecedented violence, to be artisans of peace. We try to be peacemakers in our small way, in our daily life”: says Sister Antonietta Profumo to Agenzia Fides from the community of Our Lady of the Apostles, head of the health center in Kolowaré (see Fides 18/9/2017). “We have welcomed numerous sick, young and old people from every part of the country in our Health Center”, continues the nun. “Thanks to the support of so many benefactors, we have been able to take care of a large number of poor people and offer them the necessary for better health. Several malnourished children have been able to improve their life and health. This is our contribution to promoting development, peace and the common good of the country”, she continues.
“Our 53 AIDS patients were able to participate in pastoral initiatives organized for them. There were weeks full of initiatives for them and for the animators, moments lived in the joy of being together and sharing. They attended repetition courses offered by the village children, films, games, dances and even medical check-ups, more in-depth analysis, group meetings”, says Sister Etta.
Furthermore, “the project to intervene for the treatment of cataracts continued throughout the year. 149 people were operated and others are on the waiting list. We hope to give sight to the latter too. We always dream of a good and fraternal world, where each person has his place with dignity and love. Courage comes to us from our faith in the Lord, from the love that his Gospel and his bread of life sow in our existence”, concludes the religious.
